Reading Lesson:
Astronomers have discovered 128 new moons around Saturn, bringing its total to 274. This is almost twice as many as all the other planets combined. Saturn is now the planet with the most moons in the solar system, far ahead of Jupiter, which has 95 confirmed moons. Scientists used a telescope in Hawaii to find these new moons, after they first spotted hints of them in earlier research.
The new moons are not large, round moons like Earth’s moon. Instead, they are small, irregularly shaped, and only a few kilometers wide. Scientists believe they were once part of bigger moons that broke apart in violent collisions millions of years ago. Many of these moons are part of a group called the “Norse cluster,” meaning they will eventually be named after Norse gods. However, scientists are running out of names, so they may need to adjust their naming system in the future. Right now, there is no exact definition of what counts as a moon, and some scientists think there should be one, especially as more small moons are discovered.
Studying these moons could give scientists clues about the past of our solar system. Many of Saturn’s small moons seem to be leftover pieces from past collisions, and learning more about them might help explain how Saturn’s famous rings were formed. Some scientists believe the rings could be the remains of a moon that was torn apart by Saturn’s gravity.

Other moons in the solar system
Many planets in our solar system have moons. A moon is a natural object that travels around a planet. Some planets have only one moon, while others have many.
Earth has just one moon. It is the brightest object in our night sky. Our moon is much smaller than Earth, but it is close, so we can see it well.
Mars, the planet next to Earth, has two small moons. They are not round like Earth’s moon. They are shaped more like potatoes. Scientists think these moons might be old asteroids that Mars pulled in with its gravity.
Jupiter, the largest planet in the solar system, has many moons—more than seventy. Some of Jupiter’s moons are big, and some are small. One of the biggest is called Ganymede. Ganymede is even bigger than the planet Mercury. It has ice and rock, and scientists believe it might have an ocean under its surface.
Uranus and Neptune, which are far from the sun, have their own moons too. Uranus has more than twenty moons, and Neptune has over ten. These moons are also cold and made mostly of rock and ice because they are so far from the sun.
Saturn
Saturn is a large planet in our solar system. It is the sixth planet from the sun. Saturn is very big, much bigger than Earth. It is made mostly of gas, not solid ground like Earth. This means you could not stand on Saturn because it does not have a hard surface.
One thing that makes Saturn special is its rings. These rings go all the way around the planet. They are made of ice, rock, and dust. Some of the pieces are small, like grains of sand. Others are as big as houses. The rings look very beautiful when you see them through a telescope.
Saturn also has many moons. One of Saturn’s moons is called Titan. Titan is covered in thick clouds and has lakes made of a liquid called methane. Scientists are very interested in Titan because it might have some of the things needed for life.
Even though Saturn is far away, people have learned a lot about it. They use powerful telescopes and send special machines, called spacecraft, to study the planet. Saturn is a cold, windy place, and it takes a long time to travel there.
Saturn moves slowly around the sun. It takes about 29 years to make one full trip. This means one year on Saturn is the same as 29 years on Earth.
Titan
Titan is the largest moon of Saturn. It is a very interesting place because it is so different from Earth. Scientists wonder if some kind of life might be able to exist there.
Titan has thick clouds all around it. The surface is very cold, much colder than any place on Earth. It is so cold that gases like methane become liquid and form lakes and rivers. These lakes are not made of water like on Earth. They are made of liquid methane and ethane. The air on Titan is also very different from Earth’s air. People could not breathe there without special equipment.
Even though Titan is very cold and has no liquid water on the surface, scientists still think it is possible that simple life could exist. This is because Titan has many of the same chemicals that were present on early Earth before life began. Some scientists believe there might be an ocean of liquid water deep under Titan’s surface, hidden beneath the ice. If this ocean exists, it might be warm enough for tiny life forms to live.
So far, no life has been found on Titan. But scientists continue to study it. They send spacecraft to take pictures and collect information. In the future, they plan to send more missions to explore Titan more closely. Titan is one of the most exciting places in the solar system for the search for life. Even if there is no life there now, studying Titan helps scientists understand how life might start on other worlds.
